MAR-2006
By 1st Lt. Mitch Drucker, Leadership Officer
Coral Springs Cadet Squadron

Cadets and Senior Members from the Coral Springs Cadet Squadron had some high powered rocketry fun at the Florida Space Modeling Association/Tripoli West Palm Club on Saturday 25-MAR-2006. As usual, the early spring weather in south Florida was beautiful although a bit windy.

The high point of the day was assisting 1st Lt. John Edwards, FL WG Model Rocket Officer and watching him meet all of the requirements associated with Level 1 certification for high power rocketry.

It took Lt. Edwards two attempts to meet this milestone achievement as his first effort was unsuccessful because the chute did not fully deploy.

However, the I-impulse class motor installed on his second effort was successful. Level 1 certification allows the purchase and use of H and I impulse class motors. Lt. Edwards plans on progressing to Level 2 and Level 3 over the coming months. Congratulations again Lt. Edwards!

Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to Rick Boyette, President of FSA-TWP and his entire club for their hospitality to our Cadets during this monthly launch event.

We also were treated to lunch by Dr. Thomas Steffen, Project Director, and Kennedy Space Center. Dr. Steffen has been working with LT. John Edwards in achieving his Level 1 certification and has plans to continue to build a relationship between his organization and Civil Air Patrol

In attendance for the High Powered Model Rocketry launch day was 1ST Lt. John Edwards, Squadron Commander Captain Bruce Sage, Lt. Col. Jeff Stahl, 1ST Lt. Mitch Drucker and Cadets Navid Abhaisingh, Lawrence Drucker, Winston Jean-Pierre, Alex Sage, Keith Wyman. The Squadron, once again is planning to participate in the “still-to-be announced” FLWG Model Rocketry Competition.

Here we see Alex Sage making unwise seating arrangements.  Despite his preparing himself for a mishap as we can see, fortunately the only items launched were rockets!

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with almost 60,000 volunteer members nationwide. Volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counterdrug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members take a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the almost 25,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs. CAP has been performing missions for America for more than 60 years. For more information please see www.flwg.cap.gov  and www.cap.gov.
